DIY Watermelon Mat

Nothing says Summer more than WATERMELON, and walking through Ikea recently I saw this bright red door mat and thought just that. The mat itself cost just $4.99, the paints I already had... I couldn't wait to get started.

I chose to use my water-based screen printing inks to do this, but acrylic paints would have worked just as well. With a steady hand and a little patience I got to work..... first the pips.

The sunken spots already on the mat were perfect for these and took no time at all to paint.

I chose to paint every other one, trying not to make them look too evenly spaced.

Next I painted the white rind. This took a little longer, as this means actually painting the raised carpet part of the mat. It needed a couple of coats to totally cover the red.

Next I painted the neon green edge, before giving the white rind 1 last coat. Don't these colours just say Summer!

Now all that is left is to do is find a suitable doorway, take your shoes off and let the sun start shining.

If you get excited by summer DIY this one is for you, and it will bring a smile to everyone’s face.
